State-By-State Energy Facts

As part of the BCSE’s work with Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BloombergNEF) to produce the Sustainable Energy in America Factbook, individual state factsheets were created to report the state's performance in 2018 against the following metrics:

The maps below illustrate each of these metrics and compare the state's performance against the national average.  The color gradation within the map tracks this comparison. Click on the state to see its performance and to download the full state energy factsheet.

Total generation (TWh)

This map displays the total electricity generation of the state measured in terawatt-hour (TWh).

Generation renewables as % of in-state generation

This map illustrates the percentage of in-state electricity generated from renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, biomass, biogas and waste-to-energy).

Generation from natural gas as % of in-state generation

This map illustrates the percentage of in-state electricity generated from natural gas.

Energy efficiency score (ACEEE index)

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)’s annual progress report on state energy efficiency policies and programs that save energy and produce environmental and economic benefits. The ACEEE State Energy Efficiency Scorecard uses data vetted by state energy officials to rank states in six categories—utility programs, transportation, building energy codes, combined heat and power, state initiatives, and appliance standards. This map compares the total score based on these categories that each state received.

Utility energy efficiency budget as a fraction of state-wide electricity revenue

This map displays the percentage of the budget of state-wide electricity revenue spent by utilities on energy efficiency programs. A wide range of state energy efficiency policies and program efforts are implemented through the utility sector and/or “public benefits” energy programs, which have the responsibility of administering and delivering electric and natural gas efficiency programs (ACEEE). Note: This data is from 2017.

Retail electricity prices total across residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation segments

This map compares the total retail price of electricity in the state - across residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation segments, measured in cents (¢) per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

CO2 emissions rate (tCO2/MWh)

This map compares the carbon (CO2) emissions profile of electricity generation in the state by dividing estimated CO2 emissions (measured in tons of CO2) from electricity generation by amount of electricity generated (measured in megawatt-hours).
