US Clean Energy Business Coalition Praises Adoption of Paris Agreement
World Community Sends Strong Signal for Climate Action, with Credible Reporting and Review
Paris, France – Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) President Lisa Jacobson issued the following statement on the conclusion of the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris, France:
“The achievement of the Paris Agreement finally signals that all countries are aligned in a shared effort to evolve into a low-carbon global economy. We applaud the leadership of the France, as host to this historic conference, as well as the commitment of the United States government to make this outcome a reality. We agree with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry that the solution to climate change is clean energy.
“What the inclusivity of this Paris Agreement signals, and through what the intended nationally-determined contributions (INDCs) of over 185 countries signals, is that governments are committed to orient their energy portfolios and economic development plans towards a low-carbon pathway. The creation of a transparent system of monitoring, reporting and verification of county action, along with a five-year cycle for the updating of country pledges creates a framework that the private sector can respond to as it makes investment decisions.
“We have to start accelerating action now – the urgency has been heard as reflected in the Agreement’s aim to pursue efforts to limit temperature increase to 1.5⁰C above pre-industrial levels. We are off to a start in the US with the Clean Power Plan.
“Governments cannot go it alone if we are to achieve the significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions necessary to put us on this trajectory, and public-private partnerships will be an essential component of the implementation of the Paris Agreement. We look forward to working with countries to share the lessons learned and best practices from the clean energy transformation that is already well underway in the United States.”
